Another stellar piece, Marc. I remember my Sunday School teacher, Mrs. Anna MacMillan, teaching us a whole lot about our responsibility to do good works and that we were no better or worse than the two other churches in our tiny town in the Nestucca valley. There was never a mention of political power or social status gained through belief and/or good works.
A recent trip to Austria had me thinking about how today’s posturing leaders aren’t dissimilar from the Hapsburgs’ claim that they were the “secular representatives od God.”
