All too true, and our Idahoans are the worst. But you had me laughing at the Juan Perón comment!

Yeah, I wrote to Rep. Mike Simpson, asking why — if continuing the tax cuts wasn’t going to cost anything — it was necessary to increase the debt limit. BTW, particularly good column.

Welp, it took nearly a century, but Herbert Hoover has finally won, sort of. Famously advocating for “rugged individualism,” Hoover was among many Republicans who opposed the New Deal, warning about government overreach that could lead to fascism. There’s some irony for you.

Hoover warned that the New Deal had a "pronounced odor of totalitarian government" and was a significant departure from traditional American governance. Others have banged that drum, with Reagan going the farthest in both attacking the safety net while increasing the deficit. Until now.

It was all a warmup act for Trump Part 2, the culmination of nearly 100 years of “starve the beast” policy making by Republicans in its full-throated cynicism. In cahoots with many members of Congress who know better, Trump has finally undone the most humane facets of American capitalism beyond the wildest dreams of anyone who came before. The aftermath will play out long beyond my lifetime.
